✨Mindfulness & Kids✨

With all that is happening in the world, children are experiencing higher levels of anxiety.

They aren’t as active, and so they are more restless being cooped up indoors. It’s important to get outside as much as possible, getting exercise and fresh air, but I realize it’s not always that simple.

The amount of time children are on electronics have also increased since the beginning of the pandemic.

This is why teaching mindfulness to children is crucial, even more now than ever before.

I wanted to share with you our “Calming Corner” which we created a few years back to bring mindfulness into our home daycare. I created this little nook to help teach children some tools for talking about feelings and emotional regulation.

We have a feelings chart where the kids can select their emotions and this allows the opportunity for us to discuss them. For conflict, we discuss how everyone may have felt, and it is a great tool for problem solving.

There are cozy chairs, pillows, and a basket of books so that the children can find some quiet space for some calming time.

As a group, we sit together in the calming corner and we read positive affirmation cards. We discuss the topic and everyone takes their turn to share their ideas.

There are sensory items for those extra-sensory children who need touch to help regulate their body.

We have yoga cards which help the kiddies to get some energy out but also we incorporate breathing techniques while doing it.

We use a mindfulness glitter jar to help teach the children about what emotions do inside of our body and how breathing can help to calm those emotions in the body down.

There are so many great tools out there that you can find online for teaching children about mindfulness. Google, YouTube, and Pinterest offer some amazing ideas!

I hope this post gave you some ideas also!
